Why I started U.N.I.T.E.

Movement changed my life. After my surgery, exercise was not just rehab. It was how I took my life back, one step at a time. On the hardest days, showing up and moving was the proof that I was still in the fight.

U.N.I.T.E exists because I believe every person, of every ability, deserves that same chance: to move, to belong, and to be part of something bigger than themselves.

U.N.I.T.E. was founded by Sean Leduc. Born and raised in Stittsville, Ontario, where he graduated from high school in 2014, Sean started U.N.I.T.E. while studying at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York. It began with a swim program so students with superpowers (disabilities) could become college athletes. It was incorporated in New York on October 12, 2018, and over 100 people with disabilities became college athletes through its early events. Sean knew firsthand what it meant to become a college athlete: he arrived at Roberts on a golf scholarship before switching to track and field as a pole vaulter, training under coach Jenn Suhr, and one year he competed at Canadian Nationals. U.N.I.T.E. began with a simple idea, open that same door for athletes with disabilities. Sean brought U.N.I.T.E. home when he moved back to Canada in August 2019 and settled in Carleton Place, and today our 100 percent volunteer team runs a yearly soccer program, community visits, and events like these, so people with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities can enjoy everything our community has to offer, together.
