This is the Easy Read version of this guide. It says the same things as the full guide. The sentences are short. The words are plain. Read the full guide if you want more detail.
Short answer: the Canada Disability Benefit is a payment from the Government of Canada. It pays money every month to adults aged 18 to 64 who are approved for the Disability Tax Credit.
It can pay up to $204.20 a month. How much you get depends on your income. You apply through Service Canada.
One thing matters right away. The benefit is not paid back for months before you apply. So when you apply counts. Please keep reading.
Words on this page
- CDB means Canada Disability Benefit. It is the monthly payment this guide is about.
- DTC means Disability Tax Credit. It is a tax credit from the Government of Canada. You must have it to get the CDB.
- Service Canada is the government office that takes your application and sends the payments.
- Tax return means the forms you send to the government each year about your income and taxes.
- Direct deposit means the money goes straight into your bank account.
If you live with a disability in Canada, you know how fast everyday costs add up. Food costs more. Getting to appointments costs more. Working around pain, tiredness, or barriers that other people never see costs more.
That is why this benefit matters to me. It is not life changing money on its own. But it is real money, paid every month, to adults who have already passed one of the hardest tests in our system. If you have not applied yet, please keep going, because timing really does matter here.
Who can get the Canada Disability Benefit
The CDB is for adults of working age, from 18 to 64 years old. It ends at 65. At 65, seniors benefits take over.
To get it, you must be approved for the Disability Tax Credit. You must also have filed your tax return. Right now, your 2025 tax return must be filed before Service Canada can process your benefit.
I know taxes feel like a separate chore. But for this benefit, taxes are part of the checklist. If you are behind on filing, getting that return in is a priority. Help to file is available in most communities.
How much is it?
When the benefit started, it paid up to $200 a month. That is $2,400 a year. The amount goes up with the cost of living. After the July 2026 increase, the top amount is $204.20 a month.
I want to be clear. Not everyone gets the top amount. I can never promise you a specific amount. Your amount depends on your income. Service Canada does that math.
How your income changes the amount
The benefit is tested against income. It goes down by 20 cents for every $1 of income over a set amount.
- For a single person, the amount starts to go down at income over $23,000.
- For a couple, it starts to go down at income over $32,500.
There is a protection for people who work. Some work income does not count before the amount goes down. The protected amount is $10,210 for a single person and $14,294 for a couple.
One more thing catches families off guard. A spouse or partner who does not have a DTC can change the household amount. In some cases, a waiver is possible. If this sounds like your home, ask Service Canada how it works for you.
The Disability Tax Credit is the door
I say this often because it is true. The Disability Tax Credit is the door. Almost everything else stands behind it.
No DTC approval means no Canada Disability Benefit. That is true no matter how real your disability is.
The DTC also opens the door to the RDSP, where government grants and bonds help you save for the long term. The CDB does not replace the DTC or the RDSP. It stacks on top of them. Think of it as one more layer of support.

How to apply
Applications go through Service Canada. You can apply in the way that works for you:
- Online
- By phone
- In person at a Service Canada office
Before you start, get these things ready:
- Your Social Insurance Number
- Your bank information, if you want direct deposit
- Your DTC approval in place
- Your 2025 tax return filed
If something is missing, do not let it stop you cold. Write down what is missing. Get help to sort it out. Then come back to the application. I have seen too many good people stall for months because one piece of paper felt too hard to chase down alone.
Do not wait too long
Here is the part I need you to hear plainly. It cannot be fixed later.
Back payments can cover at most 24 months. They can never go back before June 2025, when payments began. If you apply late, your back pay gets smaller for good. Every month you wait past the window is money that is gone, not delayed.
I do not say this to add pressure to an already full life. I say it because I never want to tell someone they missed money they were entitled to.
Once you are approved, payments come every month. Payment dates in late 2026 include November 19 and December 17.
How it all fits together
On its own, about $200 a month will not solve everything. I will never pretend it will.
But the pieces stack. The DTC can lower the tax you owe. The CDB puts steady money in your account today. The RDSP helps you build for tomorrow, with government money added when you save, and for many people, even when you cannot save.
That mix respects both the present and the future. You deserve clear information about all of it, with no jargon and no pressure.
If you take one thing from this guide, let it be this. Check your DTC status. File that 2025 return if you have not yet. And apply through Service Canada as soon as you can. You have already done the hardest work, living your life with courage and patience in a system that does not always make things easy. Getting the support you are entitled to is not asking for a favour. It is using a program that was built for you. I am cheering for you every step of the way.
